Itinerary Rainbow Mountain Tour Peru

We depart from Cusco at 8:00 a.m., with hotel pickup, and then travel by private vehicle through the South Valley. After approximately 3 hours of driving, we arrive at the starting point of the hike.

The hike lasts about 2 hours with a gentle uphill ascent, beginning at 4,600 meters (15,091 ft) above sea level. The viewpoint is located at 5,000 meters (16,404 ft), from where you will enjoy spectacular views of the sacred Vinicunca Mountain, famous for its colorful mineral stripes. From this viewpoint, you can also see the impressive Ausangate Glacier Mountain and several red-colored mountains.

Afterwards, there is an optional hike of about 45 minutes to the famous Red Valley viewpoint, which is a moderate walk. After enjoying the views, we descend for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes back to the vehicle.

Finally, we drive back to Cusco, which takes around 3 hours by car.

Two Routes to Visit Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca from Cusco

Route 1: Classic Vinicunca Route

The first option is the traditional route. You travel by car from Cusco for approximately 3 hours along the standard ุงู„ุทุฑูŠู‚ to the trailhead. From there, you hike uphill for about 2 hours, with a mix of gentle slopes and steeper sections, until you reach the viewpoint at over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) above sea level.

After enjoying the breathtaking views and taking photos, you return along the same trail, which takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes downhill, followed by a 3-hour drive back to Cusco.

On this route, there are only two ways to reach the summit:

  • Hiking on foot
  • Renting a horse

  • Round trip: 130 soles

Route 2: Alternative Route (Longer but More Options)

The second route involves a longer 4-hour drive from Cusco, followed by an uphill hike of about 1 hour and 20 minutes. After reaching the viewpoint and enjoying the scenery, you descend for approximately 35 minutes back to the vehicle, then return to Cusco by car in another 4 hours.

This route offers more transportation options:

  • ATVs (quad bikes) (advance reservation required): 200 soles round trip
  • Horse rental: 100 soles round trip
  • Motorbikes with drivers: 90 soles round trip

Travel Tip

If you want to reach the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint easily and avoid strenuous hiking at high altitude, the best option is to take a motorized vehicle such as a motorbike taxi. The ride uphill takes only 15 minutes, making it a fast and convenient alternative.

With this option, you can even leave Cusco later in the morning (around 10:00 a.m.) and still enjoy a smooth and efficient visit to Rainbow Mountain.

Firstly, you start the hike from 4,150 masl (13,615 ft) then you climb during the hike around 1,050 meters, but in case you get altitude sickness, the tour guides always bring some oxygen tanks, so you will be fine with this hike.

  • Good hiking shoes and extra sneaker shoes, in case your shoes get wet if it is the rainy season
  • A pair of socks, 2 trousers if it is the rainy season, warm clothing, a rain jacket with a rain poncho, and good gloves

  • Some drinking water, but along the trail, there are local shops to buy sealed water and snacks
