The History About Choquiquirao Trek in Peru
Choquequirao Peru is a remarkable Inca fortress built around 1400 A.D., often called the sacred โsister cityโ of Machu Picchu. Located at the edge of the Amazon jungle, in the valley of the snow-capped Salkantay Mountain and north of the Apurรญmac River, Choquequirao lies within the Santa Teresa district and the Quillabamba province of the Cusco region in Peru.
The Choquequirao archaeological site spans 1,810 hectares along a dramatic mountain ridge. More than just a fortress, it was also a significant religious center, where the main residential area housed mummies. Archaeologists discovered stone niches facing each other, some with ornamental windows for offerings, along with houses where Inca priests once lived.
The site is divided into several areas, including the lower village and upper village, with two main plazas. The upper plaza served as a ceremonial platform, known as an ushno. Visitors can also explore extensive agricultural terraces and storage warehouses, designed to preserve food and trade products from other regions.
Choquequirao served as a religious, political, and economic center, acting as a cultural and commercial hub connecting the Andes Mountains, the Amazon jungle, and the Peruvian coast. This makes the Choquequirao Trek one of the most rewarding hiking experiences in Peru, offering a unique combination of Inca history, spectacular landscapes, and living Andean culture.
